Protracted intra- and inter-pluton magmatism during the Acadian orogeny: evidence from new LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon ages from northwestern Maine, USA

چکیده
Devonian granitoid plutons comprise a major part of the bedrock northwestern Maine representing magmatic expression Acadian orogeny in this northern Appalachian orogen. They are petrographically diverse with minerals characteristic both I- and S-type granites, some cases within same intrusion, compositionally zoned. New LA-ICP-MS ages presented here elucidate timing duration magmatism. The earliest phase magmatism began around 410–405 Ma emplacement Flagstaff Lake Igneous Complex, presence contemporaneous mafic rocks suggests that mantle-derived magmas were also produced at time. Late ages, ca. 365 Ma, for many intrusions, such as Chain Ponds Songo plutons, reveal continued 45 million years during which produced. In addition, there is evidence intrusive activity was prolonged example Rome-Norridgewock pluton Mooselookmeguntic 10–15 myr between units. new suggest break 400 390 apparently separating into early late pulses. production lower crustal I-type appears to have been concentrated later, 380–365 although several granitoids emplaced period. Chemical Abrasion Applied to LA-ICP-MS U–Pb Zircon Geochronology
Zircon (ZrSiO4) is the most commonly used mineral in U–Pb geochronology. Although it has proven to be a robust chronometer, it can suffer from Pb-loss or elevated common Pb, both of which impede precision and accuracy of age determinations. Chemical abrasion of zircon involves thermal annealing followed by relatively low temperature partial dissolution in HF acid. It was specifically developed ...
متن کاملZircon U-Pb geochronology of the Ottawan Orogeny, Adirondack Highlands, New York: regional and tectonic implications
Both single and multigrain U-Pb zircon thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) as well as sensitive high resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP ll) dating of two suites of Adirondack granites have yielded ages constraining the principal tectonomagmatic events of the Ottawan Orogeny to the interval ca 1090–1035 Ma. The earliest of these consists of mildly A-type hornblende granites of the Hawkeye...
متن کاملDating of Precambrian Metasedimentary Rocks and Timing of their Metamorphism in the Soursat Metamorphic Complex (NW IRAN): Using LA–ICP-MS, U–Pb Dating of Zircon and Monazite
Soursat Metamorphic Complex (SMC) in west of Takab city is one of the polyphase metamorphic terrenes in northern Sanandaj-Sirjan metamorphic belt of Iran. The SMC composed mainly of metasedimentary rocks associated with granitic intrusions. Based on metamorphic rocks, two metamorphic phases could be separate in the complex. M1 is representative of regional metamorphisms which varies from greens...
متن کاملSmall-volume U–Pb zircon geochronology by laser ablation-multicollector-ICP-MS
U–Pb zircon geochronology is hampered by problems acquiring meaningful geologic ages on zoned grains that retain isotope signatures from multiple growth or thermal events. We present a new method using laser ablation-multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry to overcome complications asso ciated with intricately zoned zircon crystals through in situ sampling of zircon volumes...
متن کاملNew ideas on the Proterozoic-Early Palaeozoic evolution of NW Iberia: insights from U–Pb detrital zircon ages
U–Pb ages were obtained on single detrital zircon grains separated from six samples of Neoproterozoic and Lower Palaeozoic sedimentary and volcanosedimentary rocks from NW Iberia using the laser ablation microprobe-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LAM-ICP-MS) method. Precambrian greywackes yielded abundant zircons with Neoproterozoic (800–640 Ma) and Mesoproterozoic (0.9–1.2 Ga) ag...
